Postdoctoral Fellowship Available at Columbia East Asian Institute

The Weatherhead East Asian Institute invites applications for a postdoctoral fellowship through the International Network to Expand Regional and Collaborative Teaching (INTERACT) program at Columbia University. This fellowship is for the academic year 2012-2013 and is open to scholars conducting research on East Asia and Southeast Asia within a global context.

The Weatherhead East Asian Institute is pleased to offer one INTERACT Fellowship to an outstanding scholar of modern and contemporary East Asia with a demonstrated emphasis on global context and connections. The fellowship will cover a ten-month period beginning August 1, 2012, and comes with a stipend of $45,000 plus benefits.

INTERACT is a pioneering program at Columbia University that focuses on developing global studies in the undergraduate curriculum through a network of postdoctoral scholars focused on cross-regional, trans-regional, and interdisciplinary study.

Columbia University will offer several INTERACT Postdoctoral Fellowships in the 2012-2013 academic year, with candidates selected by centers and institutes across the University. Candidates will function as liaisons between their home office and the INTERACT network of scholars with other regional and disciplinary specializations.

Graduate-Study Scholarships at Australian National University

The Australian National University Korea Institute in the College of Asia and the Pacific invites applications for two Ph.D. scholarships and one M.A. scholarship for 2012 commencement based on funding from the Academy of Korean Studies.

The two Ph.D. Scholarships in Transnational Humanities in Korean Studies carry grants of A$25,000 per annum, tax-free, paid in fortnightly installments for up to four years, pending satisfactory academic performance.

The closing date for applications is February 24, 2012. Applicants should submit an application form, a research proposal that indicates familiarity with the research area and outlines the applicant’s approach to the Ph.D. research topic (three pages including bibliography), and a curriculum vitae electronically to korea@anu.edu.au. Applicants should ensure that they nominate three referees who can submit references to the University by the closing date for applications.

Master of Arts scholarship

The M.A. Scholarship in Transnational Humanities in Korean Studies carries a grant of A$23,000 per annum, tax-free, paid in fortnightly installments for two years full-time, comprising a year of coursework and a one-year research project (thesis).

Northeast Asian History Foundation Book Publication Support

The Northeast Asian History Foundation has announced a competition for publication support for a single-author or co-authored book-length manuscript or an edited volume. The selected applicant will receive up to US$20,000 in publication support, and the manuscript will be published as a book by October 31, 2012.

Suitable subjects include Korea-Japan history, Korea-China history, shared historical awareness in East Asia, issues relating to Dokdo, the East Sea, territorial rights, and other topics related to the Foundation’s founding objective.

Applications will be accepted until February 3, 2012. The selected applicant will be notified by March 30, 2012.

Call for Proposals: American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages

The Korean Special Interest Group (KSIG) of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) is accepting proposals for sessions (60 minutes) or papers (20 minutes) for the KSIG sessions at the 2012 ACTFL convention to be held in Philadelphia November 16-18, 2012. Especially desired are proposals in collaboration with K-12 and college addressing pedagogical issues applicable to Korean teaching.

ACTFL guidelines for submissions:

Sessions are limited to four presenters and should address a topic of interest to attendees. Sessions are 60 minutes in length. Presenters should avoid reading papers or study results, but instead, should share valuable information and skills in an engaging format.

Paper presentations (20 minutes) should address a research topic of interest to attendees. Presenters should avoid reading papers or study results and instead should present the valuable information in an engaging format.

Journal of Korean Studies Issue on Korean Cinema Now Available

The Journal of Korean Studies has announced the availability of the journal’s first thematic/guest-edited issue, “Unsettling the National in Korean Cinema” (Volume 16 No. 2, fall 2011).
